Facial aesthetics is the non-surgical management of the effects of ageing on the face. As you get older you may want to look less tired and more youthful, without having to resort to cosmetic surgery. If the idea of a more attractive look with a slimmer looking face and softer features appeals to you then facial aesthetics may be for you.
Botox is a protein which is derived from the Botulinum toxin, produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Botox is a toxin, but in very small quantities can reversibly paralyse muscles, such as facial muscles.
As a cosmetic treatment, Botox can help reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. Originally developed to help reduce muscle problems around the eyes of children, since the early 90s it has been used to help soften lines on the face, and give a more youthful appearance. Botox is commonly used in the upper part of the face.
Botox is known as a neurotoxin. It can disturb the signalling that occurs between nerves and muscles which makes muscles contract. A chemical called Acetylchloline is normally released from the nerves causing this contraction to take place. Botox will block this chemical, and thus stops the muscles from contracting, softening wrinkles on the face. This is a reversible, non-permanent process which can last around 3-6 months, before the effect begins to wear off.
Dermal fillers are used to fill out volume and smooth lines in the face. They are injected gently under the skin, and absorb water to rejuvenate the facial profile. They are commonly used in the mid and lower face, to fill out nasolabial folds (side of the nose) marionette lines (from the corner of the mouth to the chin), the jawline, cheeks and lips.
Skin contains fibres of collagen and elastin, supported and cushioned by water. As you get older these fibres get less springy, and water around them dries out, leading to wrinkles, lines and loss of volume.
There are permanent and non-permanent fillers that can be used. At Na-Nóg Dental we use a Hyaluronic Acid based filler which is temporary. Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally found sugar substance present in skin, and it is absorbed by the body over time.
Facial fillers usually last 6-18 months, depending where they are injected, and what type of filler is used. Areas of the face which haven’t been treated with fillers will carry on ageing.
