Aesthetic Dentistry vs Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is been driven by demand to have white teeth that look like photos of celebrities. Cosmetic dentistry may be thought of as altering a patient’s smile, sometimes too obviously, with no change in functionality.

Aesthetic dentistry involves more than just improving the appearance of teeth... it is about making sure that a patient’s own teeth are preserved as much as possible, are natural looking, that healthy gum and bone are maintained, and that procedures are undertaken with a minimally invasive approach.

“Aesthetic dentistry is about mimicking nature, whilst cosmetic dentistry suggests man made.”

Why is aesthetic dentistry different?

At Na-Nóg Dental we use the term “aesthetic” to describe our dentistry, which in Greek means copying nature’s beauty. We use our technical skills, and clinical judgement, to recreate and mimic the natural beauty of teeth.

Aesthetic dentistry aims to give the patient the best natural-looking smile, which can be appreciated from a distance, as being beautiful, and should not stand out as fake, unnatural, and obvious. Your teeth should not be the same colour as your bathroom sink!

Real aesthetic dentistry is about getting the best outcome in terms of appearance, colour, tooth position, and function.

Cosmetic dentistry does not encompass all of this, since its more about the appearance and visual perceptions, sometimes with irreversible biological consequences to the teeth underneath.

What treatments encompass aesthetic dentistry?

Aesthetic Treatments at Na-Nóg Dental

Treatments can include tooth whitening, composite bonding, veneers, and crowns, alone or in combination.

True aesthetic dentistry would encompass the options of first moving teeth to their desired positions, if they are crooked or misaligned, using orthodontics. This would be done before prescribing other treatment modalities, such as tooth whitening or thin veneers, to give you the best natural looking smile.

Sometimes patients who were driven for purely cosmetic reasons, may find that their work has failed very quickly and, in some cases, may be worse than their original problems, if there is disregard to the underlying teeth, and their position, health and function in the mouth.

Deintyddfa Na-Nóg Dental & Implant Team are some of Wales’s most experienced clinicians in the field of aesthetic dentistry. We work closely with experienced dental technicians producing natural looking Emax veneers and crowns, and use Optident whitening gel and trays. This combined expertise ensures long lasting, natural looking restorations for healthy, happy smiles.
